 | Reliable | Emir of Jemaah Islamiya since the death of Abdullah Sungkar in 1999. The U.S. government says he personally approved JI's various terrorist operations. He denies being a terrorist or leading a terrorist organization. He has called for the destruction of the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines. He was imprisoned and convicted in Indonesia on conspiracy charges, and released in June 2006 after having his sentence reduced. Australia and other nations strongly criticized his release. The U.S. government ordered his assets frozen on April 13, 2006.1 |
