![]() | Reliable | In mid-1999 it became apparent to Khalid Shaikh Mohammed that the Yemenis assigned to the "planes operation" would not be able to get into the United States. So KSM split the plan in two parts, one into the suicide hijackings that actually took place, and the other to a plan to hijack and destroy in midair U.S.-flagged and -bound airliners. Bin Laden cancelled this part of the operation in spring 2000, deciding it was too complicated to pull off.1 | |
