Landing Platform Dock - LPD
Pakistan has a fine navy, with a diverse range of capabilities, and is actively upgradings these forces. Pakistan also has a Marine Corps, or at least a military unit that it calls a Marine Corps. Strangely, Pakistan has essentially no amphbious assault capability [apart from four small hovercraft used for border patrol duties]. Pakistan has no modern dock landing platforms [LPDs], not even an antiquated Landing Ship Tank [LST], nor even the stray Higgens Boat [LCVP]. Nor even a serious discussion of acquring such a capability.
Amphibious forces have long been a mainstay in the quiver of options for military operations ranging from large-scale combat operations to non-combatant evacuation and humanitarian operations. Although the many threats faced by various countries continue to evolve and geo-political issues constantly shift centers of gravity, the ability to rapidly put forces ashore remains a vital capability for many navies around the world. In recent years, amphbious forces have been a major focus of force modernization for a number of Asian navies, in particular.
Pakistan measures its military posture by that of India, but this is one area in Pakistan has not sought in the least to match. By late 2011 India cleared a Rs 2,176-crore acquisition of eight LCUs (landing craft utility), capable of "hard beaching" on enemy shores, to boost the country's amphibious warfare and island protection capabilities. This came as the defence ministry was finalizing another project to acquire four Landing Platform Docks (LPDs) for "stand-off beaching", for around Rs 16,000 crore. These new plans follow a significant buildup in other amphibious warfare ships, including the induction of the 16,900-ton INS Jalashwa, formerly the USS Trenton.
On one discussion forum, a commentator asked "Why do we need amphibious ships? What good would it be to send a lone amphibious ship with a single contingent of PN Marines to land at Bombay? So they could get slaughtered? The PN is a defensive force aiming to keep our shipping lanes open. No need for an amphibious capabilities." Another commentator noted "Typically any and every navy wants all types of ships. Unfortunately, reality is that only very very few countries can afford such a 'balanced' navy. So the real question is, what is the rank order of priority for the PN of different types and kinds of ships. At present, I think modern frigates and submarines rank highest and an aircraft carrier lowest for the PN. Large amphibious ships are pretty low in the ranking as well (though as limited capability might be usefull), as are large ex-Us destroyers...."
On another forum, one commentator noted that ".... if like Zaid Hamid, Pakistan wants to take over India, then they need such capabilities like large amphibious warships. India has a vast shore, especially east and south-western coasts, where troops can land from large Pakistani amphibious ships backed by an air wing. These areas are thousands of km away from Pakistan. So a powerful amphibious capability is must to take over India." But another commentator questioned "Why spend $10 billion on a Navy to carry out a Shore Landing when you can fly accross with Para trooprs or Walk accross the Border. For $1 bilion."
Zaid Hamid [full name Syed Zaid Zaman Hamid] has, according to one observer, secured a niche similar to Glenn Beck in Pakistani media. Others say he is the Pakistan version of Harun Yahya, the Turkish creationist and one-man marketing machine. Author Muhammad Hanif described Zaid Hamid as “a cross between an effeminate Che Guevara and Hafiz Saeed on acid.” He blames Indian, US, Israeli agencies for the suicide bombings in Pakistan. In 2009 Qatari channel Al-Jazeera and Gallup Pakistan conducted a survey in which Pakistanis were asked whether the Pakistani Taliban, India or the US were the greatest threat to the country. Fifty-nine per cent said it was the US, 18 per cent believed it was India and 11 per cent thought it was the Taliban.
Some consider Zaid Hamid an extremist with an agenda of destruction. Zaid threatens India that it will be taken over by Pakistan if India does not stop its aggressive policies against Pakistan. But Hamid is convinced that India will not stop its aggression, and the whole process will end in a war that India will start and Pakistan will finish in victory. Zaid Hamid's failed TV show ‘Brasstacks‘ was built on anti-India hysteria.
Ziad Hamid’s team have created a website to provide total 5 Hadiths for ghazwa-e-hind - the muslim conquest of India. There are two types of ghazwat. Ghazwat-e-Waqiya include those wars which were fought during the times of the Prophet. These can be further divided into "ghazwa" and "surriyya". Ghazwa is a technical term in Islam for a war in which Rasul-ullah (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) himself participated. Ghazwat-e-Mo'uudah include the future wars which have been predicted in the hadeeths of the Prophet. Ghazwa-e-Hind is not mentioned in all 6 books of hadith ( Sihah-e-Sittah, the most authentic books of hadith) and it is also not mentioned in any Maroof or Mutawattar ( Authentic and continuously stated ) hadith. In many discussions online, Ghazwat-ul-Hind is often described as a “myth” and its Ahadith are described as “fabricated”.
One narration is by Hadhrat Thoban who was a freed slave of the Holy Prophet. He said, ‘the Holy Prophet said: “There shall be two groups from my Ummah whom Allah will completely protect from the Fire and Hell”. In another narration it is mentioned that the members of these two groups shall enter Jannah without any reckoning. The Holy Prophet indicated these two groups: One that shall participate in Ghazwah-tal Hind and the other that will participate in Jihad along with Isa [aka Jesus] after his Return (to earth). Hadhrat Abu Hurairah states that the Holy Prophet promised us Ghazwah-tal Hind. It is said that Ghazwah-tal Hind is presently taking place in the sub-continent.
Ameer Muhammad Akram Awan Shaikh Silsilah Naqshbandiah Owaisiah stated on 30 November 2008 that: "There are two very attractive facts about Ghazwah-tal Hind. The first is that, a Muslim, who participates in it with Iman and sincerity, to support the Truth and to subdue falsehood, will be declared as free from Jahannam by Allah-swt. If he is killed in it, he will be included in the most chosen of the Shuhada and if he lives, he will receive the certificate of freedom from Jahannam. Secondly; Although it will be a very intense and protracted war, it will end in victory for Islam and the Muslims. Pakistan will no longer remain a small Muslim country but the entire al-Hind will turn into an Islamic state. The Renaissance of Islam will commence here and Truth will prevail over the entire world."
