Bandar Abbas Air Base, 9th Tactical Air Base
The Bandar Abbas Air Base (N27°13'05.41" E56°22'40.35") is located along the southern coast of Iran on the Strait of Hormuz. This base is part of the Southern Area Command of the Iranian Air Force. The air field is used for both civilian and military needs. A naval base is also located at Bandar Abbas, which deploys two helicopter wings. As of 2008 it was unclear whether the IRIAF was still operating from Bandar Abbas.
The base originally consisted of two tactical squadrons (91st and 92nd), a SAR Flight, and a support/search and rescue squadron. Additonally, the F-4 overhaul facilities and main repair facilities of the Southern Area Command were located at Bandar Abbas.
In 1988, the 91st Tactical Fighting Squadron was reduced when a C-130 crashed near Bandar Abbas. The crash took the lives of many members of the flying crews.
