Bam, a community of 90,000 renowned for its ancient citadel, is located about 1,000 km (620 miles) southeast of Tehran.
On 26 December 2003 a devastating killer quake in Kerman destroyed some 90 percent of the buildings in the city of Bam. According to IRNA reporter in the city the number of victims and injured civilian was very high. Since about 70 percent of the houses in the city were made of bricks, many citizens had been trapped under fallen debris. Many relief workers rushed to the city for rescue operations. On 28 December 2003 Iranian Interior Minister Mussavi Lari said the death toll in the Bam earthquake in southeastern Iran was expected to exceed 20,000. At the time Lari said that 15,000 bodies had already been buried and more fatalities were feared.
