Chen Bingde

Chen Bingde as of 2007 is a general of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in charge of the Headquarters of the General Staff. Chen was born in July 1941 in Nantong, Jiangsu Province.

Chen joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1962, and has been a member of the 15th and 16th CPC Central Committee. He was conferred the military rank of major general in September 1988, lieutenant general in July 1995 and general in June 2002.

Chen graduated from college in 1958 and started his career in a workshop producing liquor in his hometown of Nantong in Jiangsu Province. Three years later in April 1961 Chen joined the Ground Force of the PLA and was eventually promoted to a squad leader. In 1964 Chen was promoted to a platoon leader and a year later in 1965 he was promoted to a staff officer of the operation and training division at the headquarters of the PLA Ground Forces.

While at the PLA headquarters in 1971 Chen was appointed as the head of the Operation and Training section. Three years later in 1974 Chen was promoted to the Chief of Staff at a regimental headquarters of the PLA Ground Forces in 1974. In 1976 Chen was appointed the Deputy Chief of Staff at a seperate division headquarters of the PLA Ground Forces. In 1977 Chen became a regimental commander of the PLA.

Two years later in 1979 Chen was promoted to the Chief of Staff at a division headquarters of the PLA . While serving as a Chief of Staff he studied in the Basics Department of the PLA military academy for two years.Chen was promoted to a division commander of the PLA Ground Forces in 1982. In 1983 Chen became the Deputy Army Commander of the PLA. While Deputy Army Commander he studied at the PLA Military Academy until 1985.

Upon finishing his studies he was promoted to the Deputy Commander and the Chief of Staff of an army group of the PLA. Following Chen's tour as Chief of Staff he was appointed the headmaster of Nanchang Army Academy in 1990. In 1992 he was appointed as the headmaster of the Academy of Army Command.

Following his Headmaster assignments Chen was appointed the commander of a group army of the Ground Force in 1993. At the end of 1993 he was appointed the Chief of Staff and elected as a standing member of the CPC Nanjing Military Area Command Committee.Three years later in 1996 Chen was appointed the commander and the deputy secretary of CPC Nanjing Military Area Command Committee.

After Nanjing he was appointed as the commander and deputy secretary of CPC Jinan Military Area Command Committee in 1999and in 2004 Chen was elected as a member of the CPC Central Military Commission, and appointed as the director and the secretary of CPC Committee of the PLA General Armament Department.

In 2005 Chen was elected as a member of the CPC Central Military Commission, a member of the Central Military Commission of PRC, and appointed as the director and the secretary of the CPC Committee of the PLA General Armament Department. From 2004 to 2007 Chen was the chief commander of China's manned space program under the General Armaments Department.
