BNS Abu Bakar - Ex RN Frigates (BNS UF,AB,AH)
In the 1950s the Royal Navy had a number of specialist frigates such as the Type 41s for air defence and the Type 61s for air direction. In 1976 HMS Llandaff (Type 61 Frigate) was was sold to Bangladesh, as was HMS Jaguar (Type 41 Frigate) in 1978 and HMS Lynx (Type 41 Frigate) in 1982. By 2010 the Bangaldesh Navy was in the process of replacing its three former British navy frigates BNS Abu Bakar, BNS Ali Haider and BNS Umar Farooq with modern frigates in next couple of years.
H.M.S. Jaguar (F 37), Leopard Class, was built by William Denny and Bros., Ltd., at Dumbarton. Laid down 2.11.1953; launched 30.7.1957; commissioned 12.12.1959. Speed 24 knots. Standard displacement 2,300 tons; 2,520 full load. There were four ships of the class. Length is 330ft. and beam 40ft. Armament includes four 4.5in. and two 40mm guns. 06 July 1978 bought by the Navy of Bangladesh, renamed BNS ALI HAIDAR (F 17) , after a overhaul in the U.K. she arrived in November 1978 in Bangladesh.
