Afghanistan - Mazar-e Sharif

Mazar-e-Sharif is located in the Baghlan Province and is the second biggest city in Afghanistan after Kabul, with around 1 million inhabitants. The city is just three and half hours away from Kabul and 2 hours away from the Tajikistan border. The main agricultural crops grown in the area are wheat, rice, corn, sesame, and grass pea. Mazar-e-Sharif is mainly known for its cattle and leather production industry. The region also benefits from precious stones, such as emeralds and lapis lazuli.

Mazar-e-Sharif Provincial Reconstruction Team

The Swedish military took command of the Mazar-e-Sharif PRT from the British on 16 March 2006. The UK was thus feed to move to Lashkar Gah. The Mazar PRT has primarily been tasked with security sector refeorm and the disarming and demobilizing of local militias. The PRT itself is based at Camp Northern Lights and his home to the majority of Sweden's 250-troop contingent to ISAF.

The two videos above show airstrikes on the Taliban V corps near Mazar-e Sharif. The first video shows an airstrike on a Taliban command post, eliminating in the process key parts of the command and control that limits the Taliban's ability to run ground operations against the Northern Alliance. The second clip shows a direct hit on a Taliban V Corps tank in a defensive position in a wadi.

The Mazar-e Sharif division regiment headquarters houses troops, tanks, armored and support vehicles as well as other facilities. These facilities were struck on both Day One and Two of the Air Campaign.
