The NATO mine warfare exercise code-named "Ariadne 2001" took place in the Ionian Sea, beginning 30 March and ending on April 8, 2001. The Mediterranean Permanent Mine Warfare Force, headed by a Greek commander, was participating in the exercise together with Greek minesweepers, torpedo boats and logistics ships, as well as the Italian vessels Alpino, Gaeta and Rimini and the French ship Lype. The ships participating in the exercise visited the port of Patras on March 30. Captain Ioannis Zarparinis was the commander of the exercise.
