1. This bulletin contains a series of vignettes of combat experiences in WW II, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, the Falklands, Iran/Iraq, and Afghanistan taken from books and articles about the conflicts. Appraisal of these vignettes resulted in the lessons learned reflected throughout the bulletin. References are included which would be useful in training.
2. The intent of this bulletin is to identify some events in the recent past which are relevant to the present. History does not really repeat itself--situations vary considerably between units over time--but study can provide lessons which can help light units plan their training programs.
3. We looked for significant events that were similar in at least two operations. We focused on the light infantry task force and below wherever possible. Many of the lessons learned, however, should apply equally well for other levels and types of forces.
4. Your comments concerning this document or any other CALL products will be greatly appreciated. Your comments should be addressed to: Commander, Combined Arms Training Activity, ATTN: ATZL-TAL, Fort Leavenworth, KS 66027-7000.
