The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has condemned the systematic killing and torture of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails as "full-fledged war crimes," urging the international community to act.
In a statement on Thursday, Hamas slammed Israel for deliberately transforming its detention facilities into venues of systematic killing and torture of Palestinian detainees.
It stressed that since the start of the occupying regime's genocidal war on the besieged Gaza Strip in October 2023, dozens of Palestinian detainees have been killed and many more subjected to brutal mistreatment as part of an organized campaign of repression.
According to Hamas, at least 94 Palestinians have died while in Israeli custody since October 2023, with survivors and human rights groups reporting shocking abuses with details, including severe beatings, scalding with boiling water, dog attacks, sexual violence, as well as denial of food, sleep, and medical care.
"This reflects an organized criminal approach that has turned these prisons into direct killing grounds to eliminate our people," the statement read.
Hamas also decried the Israeli practices as "full-fledged war crimes under international humanitarian law that expose the brutal nature of the (Israeli) occupation's regime."
The Gaza-based resistance group also urged the United Nations, international rights organizations, and the global community to pressure Israel into halting these abuses and ensuring detainees' rights under international law.
Current estimates suggest more than 10,000 Palestinians, including women and children, are being held in Israeli prisons.
Israel has killed nearly 70,000 Palestinians and wounded at least 170,000 others in the Gaza Strip since October 2023, when it launched its genocidal war on the territory.
