Development of infrastructure in Helguvík underway

Minister for Foreign Affairs Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Kjartan Már Kjartansson, Mayor of Reykjanesbær, and Halldór K. Hermannsson, Harbour Master of Reykjanes Harbour, today signed a letter of intent on the planned development of infrastructure in Helguvík Harbour.
This involves the expansion of the NATO fuel storage facility in Helguvík, which includes the construction of a new berth as well as a storage tanks for 25 thousand cubic meters of maritime fuel. The construction will be financed by NATO.
"It is important to strengthen the defense infrastructure and capabilities here in Iceland in order to better ensure support for Allied ships conducting surveillance and operations in the North Atlantic. These facilities are also useful for us and contributes to increased security in terms of fuel supplies and port facilities," says Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Minister for Foreign Affairs.
The preparatory work and design of the aforementioned structures in Helguvík, is currently underway. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2026 and be completed in 2029.
