On 26 November, Poland announced that it has chosen Sweden to partner in its submarine programme. Poland is purchasing three submarines in one of Sweden's largest-ever naval export deals.
"Poland has chosen Sweden to partner in its submarine programme. This is a testament to the cooperation between our two countries and Sweden's status as a defence industry nation. It is also an acknowledgement that Sweden's defence industry stands strong. Saab has a world-leading submarine programme. Poland and Sweden have a shared view of the challenges facing European security. Together, Sweden and Poland will take greater responsibility for security in the Baltic Sea. We are now significantly intensifying our political, defence and industrial cooperation. In uncertain times for our entire region, we are now strengthening our part of the world together," says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
"As close Allies and Baltic Sea States, Poland and Sweden will cooperate more closely to ensure security in the entire Baltic Sea region. We have a solid foundation in our shared understanding of the long-term threat from Russia and the importance of supporting Ukraine," says Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard.
"We are facing the most serious security situation in Europe since the Second World War, and it is more important than ever that we have expanded defence cooperation in the Baltic Sea region. This deal establishes a common system for underwater operations in the Baltic Sea and enhances interoperability between the Swedish and Polish fleets," says Minister for Defence Pål Jonson.
Relations between Poland and Sweden are historically, politically and culturally strong, and the two countries have long cooperated on Baltic Sea issues. Poland was one of the first countries to ratify Sweden's accession to NATO.
In November 2024, Sweden and Poland entered into a strategic partnership agreement, which was signed by the respective heads of government. This partnership focuses on increased cooperation on security and defence, economic innovation and competitiveness, strengthening security in the Baltic Sea Region and supporting Ukraine.
In September 2025, Mr Jonson and Poland's Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz signed a Letter of Intent concerning military-technical cooperation, which lays the groundwork for joint development and production of defence systems. This cooperation will help strengthen ties between the Swedish and Polish defence industries.
Poland's procurement of Swedish submarines will further enhance cooperation between Sweden and Poland in the military, political and industrial arenas.
The Swedish submarine offering includes state-of-the-art technology provided by the United Kingdom. Together, Poland and Sweden - with support from the United Kingdom - make up a strong and decisive force in the Baltic Sea region.
