On 12-13 November, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigitas Mitkus was paying a working visit to Brussels, where he participated in various meetings and events at the European Parliament (EP).
Mitkus briefed EP members on the situation regarding the ongoing violations of Lithuania's airspace by Belarus, which are considered hybrid attacks.
"It is particularly important to ensure a coordinated response of the EU institutions to the recent intensification of Belarusian hybrid provocations against Lithuania and to raise awareness of these incidents on the European political agenda", stressed the Vice-Minister, highlighting the threat posed to the security of Lithuania and Europe as a whole.
During the meeting with the EP Vice-President Sabine Verheyen Mitkus also discussed the priorities of Lithuania's preparations for the Presidency of the Council of the EU and prospects for strengthening cooperation with the EP. The Vice-Minister also presented the initiative to establish a memorial to the victims of totalitarianism on EP premises, asking for support for this initiative and highlighting the symbolic significance of such a memorial.
During his visit to Brussels, Mitkus met with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) Nathalie Loiseau, Gabriele Bischoff, and Michael Gahler to discuss important items for Lithuania on the EU agenda and opportunities to strengthen constructive dialogue with the EP. Other relevant items on the EU agenda were also highlighted, including regional security, EU support for Ukraine, and the EU's enlargement process, in order to ensure a proper reflection of Lithuania's positions and priorities on the EU agenda, especially in view of the upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2027.
In addition, the Vice-Minister participated in the high-level seminar organized by Lithuania's Permanent Representation to the EU titled "Investing in the Growth and Resilience of EU Regions Bordering Aggressor States - Building a Stronger Europe."
