The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has allocated additional financial support to assist civilians in Gaza, facing a worsening humanitarian situation, and in Afghanistan, affected by a devastating natural disaster. With this funding, NGOs Estonian Refugee Council and Mondo are providing rapid, life-saving services, including food aid and essential supplies to the most vulnerable population groups.
In response to the exceptional humanitarian crisis and famine declared by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) in Gaza, Estonian Refugee Council began distributing food aid in the region in September, becoming the first Estonian organisation to do so. In cooperation with Gaza Soup Kitchen and thanks to donations from Estonia, emergency food aid has been delivered to four hospitals, including Al-Nasri Children's Hospital. So far, 1,400 food portions have been distributed in Gaza thanks to Estonian donors, and with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a further 9,000 portions are planned.
Following the start of the ceasefire, aid organisations in Gaza have been able to increase their operations. However, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, malnutrition remains widespread and is expected to persist until at least 2026.
In late August and early September, eastern Afghanistan was struck by two powerful earthquakes centred in Kunar Province. These were among the most severe natural disasters in recent years, destroying hundreds of villages and affecting tens of thousands of people. Women, children, and people with special needs are in particularly difficult circumstances.
NGO Mondo has extensive experience working in Afghanistan. With funding from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mondo is providing emergency humanitarian assistance to families who have lost their homes, focusing on the Kunar and Nangarhar provinces. Over a six-week period, a total of 616 people will receive support in the form of shelter, blankets, essential supplies, cash-based aid, and psychosocial assistance.
