NORFOLK (NNS) -- Capt. Mark H. Scovill, Commander, Amphibious Squadron 8, relieved the Executive Officer of the Norfolk-based Amphibious Transport Dock USS New York (LPD 21), on Nov. 21, 2011, due to misconduct.
The relief occurred during an investigation into allegations that Cmdr. John Pethel had an unduly familiar relationship with a female member of the ship's crew.
Upon completion of the investigation, Scovill awarded Pethel nonjudicial punishment on Dec. 21, 2011 for article 92 of the UCMJ, fraternization. Pethel received a punitive letter of reprimand.
Pethel, who had been Executive Officer aboard New York since Jan. 2011, has been temporarily reassigned to the staff of Commander, Naval Surface Force, Atlantic. Lt. Cmdr. Ethan Mitchell has assumed the duties of Executive Officer.
USS New York is currently in port at Norfolk Naval Station.
