Sri Lanka-SAARC-LTTE Ceasefire
The Sri Lankan rebels, Liberation Tamil Tigers of Eelam (LTTE) has announced a 10-day unilateral cease-fire in view of the 15th South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit slated to begin in Colombo on July 27.
According to reports received from Colombo, the Tamil Tigers said that the cease-fire will take effect from July 26, said a media release issued by the Political wing of the Tamil outfit.
Wishing the SAARC meeting all the success, LTTE said that the cease-fire has been announced as a 'gesture of good will' towards the SAARC movement.
However, the LTTE has cautioned that it will be 'forced to take defensive action' if the Government forces 'disrespect the goodwill gesture of the Tamils'.
Stating that their's liberation struggle, the LTTE said they had no enmity with anyone.
The LTTE had earlier signed cease-fire with the government in 2002 which was called off by the Sri Lankan government early this year as the hostilities between the two sides were continuing unabated.
The Sri Lanka government last week decided to set up 'High Security Zones' in and around Colombo to provide foolproof safety for top leaders who will be visiting the Lankan capital to attend the summit.
The SAARC Summit begins on July 27 with a series of Ministerial and official level discussions.
The Summit meeting of the leaders from the eight members, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Afghanistan, regional grouping is slated for August 2 and 3.
