BAE SYSTEMS EXPANDS FACILITY, ADDS NEW JOBS TO BUILD ARMOR FOR MINE RESISTANT AMBUSH PROTECTED VEHICLES

19 Feb 2008 | Ref. 069/2008

ANNISTON, Alabama -- BAE Systems is expanding its Anniston facility and anticipates hiring additional employees to support a $7.6 million contract which provides 20,000 light weight expanded armor panels for Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles.

“We are adding 21,875 square feet of manufacturing space and will create approximately 25 new jobs to meet future demands for this product,” said Robert Houston, vice president and Anniston site manager for BAE Systems. “Most importantly, these investments support the production of expanded armor, which provides our men and women in uniform with additional protection against a variety of threats.”

This light weight expanded armor was developed by BAE Systems and will be used on MRAP vehicles already in service. The company delivered the first 2,000 panels to the U.S. Army on Jan. 22.

The contract was awarded last September from the U.S. Army TACOM Life Cycle Management Command and is currently being performed at the Anniston. Work under this contact is expected to continue through May 2008.

In addition to the armor panels, BAE Systems also manufactures three of the five types of MRAP variants: the Caiman, the RG33 and RG31. BAE Systems MRAPs account for more than 35 percent of all MRAP vehicles purchased by the U.S. Department of Defense.

BAE Systems employs more than 1,000 people in Alabama, with facilities in Anniston, Geneva and Huntsville. The Geneva facility manufactures over 60,000 body armor components per month, including the Outer Tactical Vest conversion kits. The Huntsville facility is a leader in air and missile defense, joint interoperability, program management, quality assurance engineering, test and evaluation engineering, cost analysis, sourcing, and business process reengineering.

A new BAE Systems facility in Cordova will open March 7 to manufacture critical components for the U.S. Navy’s Advanced Gun System and Mk 57 Vertical Launch System.
