EVERETT, Wash. (NNS) -- Capt. James T. Loeblein relieved Capt. Jeffry A. Harley as Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 9 commodore in a ceremony March 23 aboard USS Momsen (DDG 92) moored at Naval Station Everett.

“I am both humbled and motivated beyond words to serve as Commodore,” Loeblein said. “It is a responsibility I do not take lightly.”

For 20 years, Loeblein served aboard various ships including USS Meyerkord (FF 1058), USS Conolly (DD 979) and USS John S. McCain (DDG 56). He most recently commanded USS Thatch (FFG 43), where he participated in both Carrier Strike Group and Expeditionary Strike Group deployments to the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Prior to being relieved, Harley gave his best wishes to Loeblein.

“Gratitude to a fellow mariner, genuine patriot, and my friend Capt. Jim Loeblein,” Harley said, “who will take this DESRON to new heights.”

As the new commodore, Loeblein expressed his eagerness to lead his new shipmates of DESRON 9.

“I have prepared both personally and professionally over many years for this occasion,” said Loeblein. “Not for prestige or power, but because it provides something not found in any other profession. It offers the unique opportunity to lead the finest core of professionals America has to offer.”

Harley is expected to report to the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City as a military fellow.

The DESRON 9 staff is embarked aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72).
