Bangladesh to get 16 Chinese fighter jets
New Delhi, Aug 4 ,IRNA -- Bangladesh is set to procure 16 fighter planes from China at a cost of dlrs 118 million under a hastily-signed agreement between the two countries recently. The deal the biggest single purchase by the Bangladesh Air Force will allow COSTIND, a Chinese government agency, to handle the modalities of the sale.

The news has created consternation in Delhi prior to Union external affairs minister Natwar Singh's Dhaka visit.

According to the english daily, the fleet includes 12 F-7 Type-III and four FT-7 aircraft, all of Chinese make. Though there was no allocation for this in Bangladesh budget for 2005-06,the green signal for the acquisition was flashed by prime minister Khaleda Zia herself.

The emergency sanction was subsequently incorporated into the defence budget as weapons procurement.
