| October 12, 2004 Release Number: 04-10-12C FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SOLDIER'S STATUS CHANGED FROM DECEASED TO KIA SLSA ANACONDA, BALAD, Iraq - The status of a 13th Corps Support Command soldier who died when his vehicle overturned was changed here Oct. 11 to killed in action. Sgt. Michael C. Barkey's death was initially believed to be the result of a July 7 vehicle accident near Ramadi. An investigation into the incident revealed that the vehicle crash and Barkey's resulting fatal injuries were caused by hostile action. Barkey was serving with the Ohio National Guard's 1484th Transportation Company at the time of his death. He will be posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. -30- |
