- Violence Claims U.S. Marine, Iraqi Security Forces AFPS 09 Aug 2004 -- A U.S. Marine, seven Iraqi police officers and four soldiers from the Iraqi Intervention Forces are the latest casualties of violence in Iraq.
- IRAQ WRAP VOA 09 Aug 2004 -- For the fifth day, U.S. forces battled militia loyal to radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr in the holy city of Najaf. Politician Ahmad Chalabi and his nephew vow to fight charges brought against them in an Iraqi court. A car bombing in the northern city of Baquba kills seven Iraqi police officers.
- Seven IPS killed in VBIED attack MNF-I/MNC-I 09 Aug 2004 -- Seven Iraqi Police officers were killed when a vehicle borne improvised explosive device detonated in Balad Ruz around 7:30 a.m. Aug. 9.
- AIF attack Al Thawra District Council MNF-I/MNC-I 09 Aug 2004 -- Four Iraqi Intervention Forces were killed, six were wounded and three Task Force Baghdad Soldiers were wounded while thwarting an anti-Iraqi force attack on the Al Thawra District Council, in Sadr City around 1:30 p.m. Aug. 8.

Squadrons complete mission, prepare to return home Marine Corps News 09 Aug 2004 -- After months of transporting and patrolling the skies of Iraq's Al Anbar province, Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 466 and Marine Attack Squadron 214, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, are going home.
- AFGHAN/US/PRISON ABUSE VOA 08 Aug 2004 -- The U.S. military in Afghanistan has completed a "top-to-bottom" review of its detention facilities, and will change some prison practices. The investigation comes as the Afghan government pushes for U.S. troops to improve their relations with locals.

- UN / SUDAN VOA 09 Aug 2004 -- U.N. workers in the Darfur region of Sudan continue to report violent attacks against internally displaced people. Officials remain hopeful that Sudan will comply with a new agreement that creates safe havens where militia activity is prohibited.
- UN representative hails progress in Burundi's post-conflict talks UN News Centre 09 Aug 2004 -- The top United Nations envoy for Burundi today hailed progress made during two days of talks in South Africa on forming a multi-party, power-sharing government at the end of the transitional political period, which followed a decade of civil conflict in the Great Lakes nation.
- SUDAN / UN VOA 09 Aug 2004 -- With Sudan facing a United Nations deadline in less than a month to show progress in the troubled Darfur region, the country's foreign minister Monday told reporters in Cairo he believes Khartoum can satisfy the U.N. demands.
- U.S. / INDONESIA / TIMOR VOA 09 Aug 2004 -- The United States Monday expressed dismay over an Indonesian appeals court ruling overturning convictions of security officials for crimes against humanity in the 1999 violence in East Timor. The State Department called the Indonesian legal process "seriously flawed."
- SUDAN / UN / DARFUR VOA 09 Aug 2004 -- A new agreement between Sudan and the United Nations to create safe havens for civilians in Darfur within 30 days is expected to be signed Monday in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum. Meanwhile, the government says it is ready to restart peace negotiations later this month in Nigeria with Darfur rebels. But analysts say they are wary about how committed the warring parties are to stopping the violence in Darfur.
- IVORY COAST / POL VOA 09 Aug 2004 -- Rebels and opposition leaders in Ivory Coast rejoined the power-sharing reconciliation government Monday, ending a four-month boycott. The reactivation of the unity government follows the signing of a new peace agreement in Accra last month.
- Sudan: Khartoum Approves Plan For Safe Areas In Darfur RFE/RL 09 Aug 2004 -- Sudan has approved an action plan drawn up with the United Nations that calls for "safe areas" to be created for displaced civilians in its troubled western region of Darfur. But with Sudan facing possible UN sanctions unless it implements the plan within 30 days, the government in Khartoum is seeking support from Arab League countries to delay any punitive measures.
- IVORY COAST / POL VOA 08 Aug 2004 -- Rebels and opposition parties in Ivory Coast have ended their four-month boycott of the power-sharing government, following a new peace agreement reached last month.

- USS Seattle Rescues Merchant Crew in Arabian Gulf NNS 09 Aug 2004 -- USS Seattle (AOE 3) rescued the crew of a sinking ship after responding immediately to a distress call originating from an Indonesia-flagged cargo ship operating in the North Arabian Gulf at approximately 10:30 p.m., Aug. 8.
