SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Senior operational and tactical leadership within the Pacific fleet gathered at the headquarters of the Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet for the first War-fighting In The Pacific Talks and the Strike Group Commanders Conference (SGCC), May 18-19.

"We are in the business of running the Navy, but this group is here at the senior level to talk about the business of fighting in the Navy," said Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet, Vice Adm. Michael McCabe, during his introduction.

He stressed that the purpose of the two-day conference was to put aside the business aspects of running the Navy and focus on operational war-fighting techniques and tactics.

Subject matter experts from the Defense Intelligence Agency, Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet, Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet and Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet also discussed current threat levels and operational plans in the pacific theater.

McCabe emphasized the importance of communication between senior leaders within each unit during exercises such as the Joint Task Force Exercise, the pre-deployment graduate-level strike group training designed to test strategic capabilities. The admiral added how input at each command level is a part of the war-fighting plan.

"It's all based on you and what your assessment is of your particular unit; where their strengths lie and what they need to emphasize more," he said.

The expected outcome of the conferences will be an improvement in approaches to war-fighting, communications and strategic operations through better utilization of senior leadership in the Pacific.
