Sniper Friendly Fire Investigation Completed
MacDill AFB - The investigation into the Apr. 14, 2003, death of a Marine Corps corporal as a result of friendly sniper fire is complete. The investigation was thorough and deliberate, and approved by the CENTCOM leadership.
The investigation, ordered by U.S. Central Command and conducted by U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Central Command, thoroughly examined the circumstances surrounding the incident that occurred in Baghdad, Iraq.
The investigation concluded there was no reason to question the conclusion of the sniper team that fired on the Marine, because his behavior and silhouette were consistent with that of an armed Iraqi irregular preparing to attack the Marines. The investigation concluded there was no information available to the team that was inconsistent with their conclusion.
