COMBINED FORCES COMMAND AFGHANISTAN RELEASE
KABUL, Afghanistan, April 03, 2004 -- Anti-coalition militia threw grenades at a coalition convoy on Wednesday and Soldiers from the 1-501st killed one and detained two of the assailants. There were no coalition casualties.
Afghan citizens, on Friday, turned in 50 mortar rounds to the coalition firebase in Orgun and 40 cans of large caliber machine gun ammunition to Gardez. A Coalition patrol also discovered a cache north of Ghazni.
The Coalition welcomes the international communities success in meeting the needs of financing Afghan reconstruction at the International Conference on Afghanistan in Berlin. The generous response of donors will enable the government of Afghanistan to meet its short-term goal of $4.47 billion in pledges for this fiscal year.
The US Congress has supported the Defense Department request for $73 million for counter-narcotic operations in Afghanistan this fiscal year.
Combined Forces Command-Afghanistan programs will integrate with other international counter-narcotics efforts. We will support the Islamic Transitional Government of Afghanistan and the United Kingdom, which has the international lead on counter-narcotics here, by providing equipment to British-trained Afghan forces.
Today in Bamian, representatives from the U.S. Civil Affairs, New Zealand Provincial Reconstruction Team and prominent figures from the local government and leaders will attend the Bamian University reopening ceremony.
The grand opening ceremony of the Gardez Courthouse is scheduled for Sunday, April 11.
