| April 4, 2004 Release Number: 04-04-05C FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Task Force 1st Armored Division Conducts Operations in Sadr City BAGHDAD, Iraq - The militia of Muqtada Al Sadr's army -- Jaysh Mahdi or Mahdi Army -- attempted to occupy and gain control of police stations and government buildings. During this attack, the illegal militia engaged coalition forces and ISF with small arms fire and RPGs. Coalition and Iraqi security forces responded halting the militia and reestablished security in Baghdad. Seven U.S. Soldiers were killed and more than two dozen wounded in the fighting. The names of the soldiers killed and injured are being with held until the next of kin have been notified. -30- |
