Poland: Defense Ministry Spokesman Resigns Over Missile Row
Warsaw, 8 October 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Poland's Defense Ministry spokesman has resigned after triggering a diplomatic row by saying French-made missiles found in Iraq were manufactured in 2003.
In a statement yesterday, the Polish Defense Ministry said the resignation of Colonel Eugeniusz Mleczak had been accepted by Defense Minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski.
On 3 October, Mleczak said the missiles were manufactured in 2003, but this was denied by French President Jacques Chirac, who said the missiles had been out of production for 15 years.
The Polish Defense Ministry is investigating how the information was issued, and is due to issue a report on 13 October.
