Hamilton Sundstrand wins $70 million flight control contract from U.S. Army

WINDSOR LOCKS, USA- North America, Connecticut, Aug 11, 2002

The U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) has contracted with Hamilton Sundstrand to supply Advanced Flight Control Computers for Black Hawk helicopters in an agreement with a total potential value of $70 million, according to Ralph Triompo, aftermarket manager for Hamilton Sundstrand Military Customer Support and Logistics.

This contract is a follow-on to a Commercial Operations Support and Savings Initiative involving CECOM, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Aviation Applied Technology Directorate of the Army Material Command, and the team of Sikorsky Aircraft and Hamilton Sundstrand.

“Hamilton Sundstrand has been supplying flight control computers for Black Hawk helicopters for more than 20 years,” Triompo said. “This award is especially significant because it validates our multi-application family of computers which have been under development for the helicopter modernization and retrofit market worldwide.”

The upgraded computer is a modernized “plug-in” replacement that offers several advantages, including advanced capability, reduced weight, lower life cycle cost and significantly higher reliability.

There are more than 2,000 Sikorsky Black Hawks in service worldwide with U.S. forces and elsewhere.

Other potential retrofit opportunities are the worldwide fleets of SH-60 Sea Hawk and MH/CH 53 series of helicopters.

The flight control computers will be manufactured at Hamilton Sundstrand’s production facility in Farmington, Conn. Sikorsky Aircraft, also a United Technologies company, manufactures the Black Hawk in Stratford, Conn.
