    • MIDEAST-PEACE TALKS 2nd long UPDATE VOA 17 May 2003 -- The Israeli and Palestinian Prime Ministers concluded their first summit early Sunday on a new U-S backed peace plan to end nearly three years of violence. The talks went ahead despite two separate attacks by Palestinian militants against Jewish settlers in the West Bank. Both sides have agreed to meet again next week.

    • SLOVAKIA / REFERENDUM VOA 17 May 2003 -- Slovakia's prime minister, Mikulas Dzurinda, says his country has approved European Union membership in a referendum that was nearly invalid because of a low voter turnout. Official results are expected Sunday, but it is already clear that over 90 percent of Slovaks participating in the ballot, voted for joining the European Union.

    • SWITZERLAND/G-8 VOA 17 May 2003 -- Swiss officials say they are prepared for visiting heads of state, anti-globalization protesters, and even the possibility of terrorist attacks drawn to next month's G-8 summit in nearby Evian, France. The leaders of the world's seven most industrialized countries and Russia have invited their counterparts from nearly 30 non-G-8 countries to take part in the summit, which is to focus on development.
