INTRO: U-S military officials say that 11 Afghan civilians have died in a bombing by coalition forces in Afghanistan. Ayaz Gul reports from neighboring Pakistan.
TEXT: A U-S military spokesman says the "tragic incident" took place in the eastern province of Paktika, near the Pakistani border. He says U-S warplanes were attacking enemy forces outside the village of Shkin when a laser-guided bomb missed its intended target and landed on a house.
Those killed in the attack include seven women. The spokesman says the circumstances of the bombing are being investigated.
The fighting in the area erupted after unidentified assailants attacked an Afghan military checkpoint that was providing security to a U-S military base. The spokesman says that coalition forces quickly reacted, and two warplanes pursued the attackers towards the border.
Nearly 12-thousand U-S and allied troops are hunting down remnants of the deposed Taleban government and the al-Qaida terrorist network in Afghanistan. The militants are blamed for recent attacks throughout the country, mainly targeting U-S and Afghan government forces. (SIGNED)
