INTRO: New reseach provides evidence that severe acute respiratory syndrome, known as SARS is caused by a new virus related to two common cold viruses. V-O-A's Jessica Berman reports.

TEXT: Researchers were almost positive SARS was related to the corona virus, an organism that causes the common cold. But when investigators in Hong Kong studied tissue samples from 50 SARS patients from five different outbreaks, they discovered the illness is caused by a separate virus that appears to be a cousin of two cold viruses.

The new virus was found in 90-percent of patients in the study, but not at all in healthy individuals or those with unrelated illnesses who were used for comparison.

The investigators say more tests are needed to confirm their findings and to find out whether the new SARS virus has come from animals. The findings are published in the current issue of the journal "The Lancet."
