INTRO: An American military helicopter with seven Marines on board has crashed in northern Afghanistan. A military spokesman is reported as saying two of the Marines were killed and the rest were injured. V-O-A's Sonja Pace reports from our Islamabad bureau.

TEXT: The helicopter with seven U-S Marines on board had taken off from Bagram airbase outside of the capital, Kabul, and crashed shortly thereafter at a high elevation in the mountains.

Rescue workers are reported on the scene. The exact cause of the crash is being investigated, but Marine spokesman Lieutenant James Jarvis initially described it as an accident.

Lt. Jarvis said the helicopter was on a mission to ferry supplies to U-S troops.

Earlier this month a U-S refueling plane crashed in southwestern Pakistan. Seven marines died in that crash. Last October, at the beginning of the U-S military operation in Afghanistan, a U-S Army Black Hawk helicopter crashed in Pakistan killing two people. (Signed)
