  • BUSH / VIEQUES VOA 30 Jul 2001 -- President Bush is standing by a U-S navy decision to wait two years before ending bombing exercises on Puerto Rico's Vieques Island. On Sunday, the people of Vieques overwhelmingly approved a non-binding referendum calling for an immediate end to the bombing. The White House says the Navy needs more time to find an alternative site.

  • OKINAWA/ARRESTS VOA 21 Jul 2001 -- Japanese police have arrested an American serviceman on southern Okinawa Island. The arrest comes just two days after U-S airman Timothy Woodland was formally charged with raping a local woman.
  • OKINAWA RAPE CHARGE VOA 18 Jul 2001 -- Japanese prosecutors have charged a U-S Air Force sergeant with raping an Okinawan woman on June 29th.
  • PENTAGON / KOREA VOA 17 Jul 2001 -- The Pentagon has confirmed it is discussing the closure of some U-S military installations in South Korea with South Korean authorities. But defense officials stress no troop cuts are under consideration.
  • KURSK RECOVERY VOA 17 Jul 2001 -- An operation to recover the sunken Russian nuclear-powered submarine Kursk has begun in the Barents Sea. As Larry James reports from Moscow, the operation is expected to take two-months.
