4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment

The 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry was first constituted on 3 May 1861 in the Regular Army as Company D, 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry and organized on 8 July 1861 at Fort Trumbull, Connecticut. It was redesignated on 30 April 1862 as Company D, 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry. During the US Civil War, the unit participated in 12 campaigns: Peninsula, Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Virginia 1862, and Virginia 1863.

The unit was redesignated on 21 September 1866 as Company D, 23d Infantry. The unit participated in 3 Indian Wars campaigns between 1866 and 1877: Arizona 1866, Idaho 1868, and Little Big Horn. In 1898, the unit participated in the Manila during the Spanish-American War. Between 1899 and 1903, the unit also participated in 5 campaigns surrounding the Philippine Insurrection: Manila, Malolos, Mindanao, Jolo, and Jolo 1903.

For the First World War, the 23rd Infantry Regiment as a whole was assigned on 22 September 1917 to the 2nd Division (later redesignated as the 2nd Infantry Division). The unit participated in 6 campaigns during the First World War: Aisne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, IIe de France 1918, and Lorraine 1918.

Company D, 23rd Infantry also participated in the Second World War with the 2nd Infantry Division, being awarded credit for participation in 5 campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe.

When the 2nd Infantry Division was sent to Korea, the 23rd Infantry Regiment, including Company D, followed. The unit participated in 10 campaigns of the Korean War: UN Defensive, UN Offensive, CCF Intervention, First UN Counteroffensive, CCF Spring Offensive, UN Summer-Fall Offensive, Second Korean Winter, Korea Summer-Fall 1952, Third Korean Winter, and Korea Summer 1953.

The unit was inactivated on 20 June 1957 at Fort Richardson, Alaska, and relieved from assignment to the 2nd Infantry Division. It was concurrently, redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Battle Group, 23rd Infantry. It was activated on 25 January 1963 at Fort Richardson, Alaska with its organic elements concurrently constituted and activated.

The Battle Group was assigned on 20 May 1963 to the 172nd Infantry Brigade (Separate). It was reorganized and redesignated on 1 July 1963 as the 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry The unit was relieved on 14 January 1966 from assignment to the 172nd Infantry Brigade (Separate) and assigned to the 25th Infantry Division.

The Battalion deployed with the 25th Infantry Division to Vietnam. There it participated in 12 campaigns: Counteroffensive, Counteroffensive Phase II, Counteroffensive Phase III, Tet Counteroffensive, Counteroffensive Phase IV, Counteroffensive Phase V, Counteroffensive Phase VI, Tet 69/Counteroffensive, Summer-Fall 1969, Winter-Spring 1970, Sanctuary Counteroffensive, and Counteroffensive Phase VII. The Battalion was inactivated on 5 June 1972 at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii following its return from Vietnam.

The unit was relieved on 2 August 1972 from assignment to the 25th Infantry Division and assigned to the 172nd Infantry Brigade (Separate). It was concurrently activated at Fort Richardson, Alaska. It was inactivated on 6 January 1983 at Fort Richardson, Alaska, and relieved from assignment to the 172nd Infantry Brigade.

The unit was assigned on 21 January 1983 to the 9th Infantry Division and activated at Fort Lewis, Washington. It was inactivated there on 28 September 1990 and relieved from assignment to the 9th Infantry Division. It was assigned on 16 March 2004 to the 172nd Infantry Brigade and activated at Fort Richardson, Alaska. It was inactivated on 16 December 2006 at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, and relieved from assignment to the 172nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

The Battalion was assigned on 17 April 2007 to the 5th Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, and activated at Fort Lewis, Washington. In July 2010, the 5th Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division was inactivated and reflagged as the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. The Battalion was relieved from assignment to the 5th Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division and reassigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.
