4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division
"Dragoon Raiders"
The mission of the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division is to prepare for deployment to the CENTCOM AOR to conduct full spectrum operations to defeat terrorists, insurgents, or paramilitary enemy forces.
The Army's fourth Stryker Brigade Combat Team was formed in early 2005 and had gone through new equipment training and fielding. They went from individual level, squad level and by early 2005 they were at platoon and company level. Soldiers liked Stryker's maneuverability. The Stryker vehicle allows infantry units to move with stealth and speed. It provided maximum maneuverability with the protection of a tank, saddled with either the M2 .50 caliber machine-gun and or the Mark 19 Mod 3 40mm automatic grenade launcher. Able to hold 11 Soldiers, the Stryker offered a clear, large-screen view of the battlefield. The vehicle itself was unique as it bridged the gap between the light and heavy concept. It was a lot more maneuverable than most tracked vehicles and the Stryker can go places the Bradley or other tracked vehicles could not get to.
In early 2006 Stryker Brigade Soldiers from Fort Lewis, Washington, deployed to Korea for a weeklong Reception, Staging, Onward Movement and Integration exercise. The relatively new unit used the exercise to get more familiar with themselves and their new vehicles. This was a new unit that was working to develope the vehicles to work well with the infantry units. The training included platoon day fires, and day and night fires for squads. The Soldiers also practiced suppressing the enemy, clearing buildings, and search and rescue operations. The purpose of the mission is to deploy a highly lethal, agile, combat and quick-strike force to support the alliance between the Republic of Korea and the United States.
On 1 June 2006 at Ft Lewis, Washington, a large Army reflagging ceremony occurred. The 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division's colors were cased, the colors of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment were transferred, and the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division's colors were uncased. Two respected military units conducted a joint reflagging ceremony at Gray Army Airfield. The 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division was inactivated and reflagged as the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment. The 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, in turn, joined the 2nd Infantry Division, activating as the 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team. At the time of its activation, the new Brigade had some 3,500 personnel.
In its history that began in 1917, the 2nd Infantry Division never included a 4th Brigade. The former 2nd Cavalry Regiment would begin a fresh set of traditions as a brand new Stryker Brigade Combat Team in the Indianhead Division. The unit consisted of the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry; 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry; 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry; F Company (Anti-Tank), 52nd Infantry; 2nd Battalion, 1st Cavalry; 2nd Battalion, 12th Field Artillery; the 202nd Brigade Support Battalion, 38th Engineer Company, 472nd Signal Company, and 45th Military Intelligence Company.
