Robinson Barracks, Germany
Robinson Barracks is undoubtedly the most scenic of the four posts in Stuttgart. It and the Grenadier housing area command a great view of Stuttgart. The hill was originally an agricultural area, and although the fields are gone the vineyards still contribute to fine local wines. In the 1930s, infantry regiments moved into the new posts, training at the foot of the hill where apartment buildings stand today. Immediately after the war, Robinson was a camp for refugees and internees.
Robinson Barracks was primarily a housing area. However, families found an elementary school, a library, a movie theater (which opened and closed intermittently during Robinson Barracks' operation) and the only combined Post Exchange and commissary in Europe, the CX, which also stocked a variety of furniture and the 4-Seasons and Toy store.
Robinson Barracks was enclosed with fence in December 2009, making off-post dining and services extremely inconvenient or inaccessible. This was largely as result of limited access to public transportation, which at that time was limited to a single bus line. There were no plans at that time to provide additional service. In May 2011, the CX was closed and separated into a Post Exchange and Commissary. These services were not reopened following the change.
